Royal Academy of Engineering – The President’s Special Awards for Pandemic Service

An engineering team led by Dr Tash Ramsander at Cambridge Aerothermal has been awarded the The President’s Special Awards for Pandemic Service by the Royal Academy of Engineering for developing a high performance ventilator for manufacture in low to middle income countries. This ventilator will be the first intensive care quality ventilator to be manufactured in Africa. The team was quickly assembled at the Whittle Laboratory at the University of Cambridge. Cambridge Aerothermal usually develops rapid technology solutions for the aerospace and power generation sectors. During the pandemic, it has focused on developing a clinical grade ventilator within a week with design changes driven by the pandemic, cost reduction and clinical demands. This new design could prove to be a game changer in low to middle income countries when it comes to treating a host of conditions including pneumonia, as well as COVID-19.
